Halloween Carnival
Nov 1, 2025: SAS Gym & Field (3–5 pm)
Join us for a family-friendly Halloween bash made just for Cub Scouts! We’ll have classic carnival games, simple crafts, a costume parade, and plenty of treats—plus just a tiny bit of spooky fun that’s perfect for all ages. Stations will be staffed by leaders and volunteers, so kids can play safely while parents mingle. Expect prizes, music, and photo spots; allergy-aware treat options will be available.
What to know:
- Costumes encouraged (no weapons or full-face masks during games).
- Bring a water bottle; concessions/snack table on site.
- Parents stay and participate—siblings welcome.
- Consider bringing a bag of nut-free candy to share.
- Volunteers needed for game stations and setup/cleanup.
It’s a great chance for our Cub Scout families to connect, make memories, and kick off the season with laughs—not frights.
Pinewood Derby/Uniform Inspection
Dec 6, 2025: SAS Gym (12–5 pm)
The Cub Scout Pinewood Derby is a beloved annual tradition where Scouts imagine, design, and build a small wooden race car—then send it flying down an angled track powered only by gravity. Using the official kit (wood block, axles, and wheels), Scouts team up with their families to learn hands-on skills in planning, measuring, cutting, sanding, painting, and tuning. Along the way they practice sportsmanship, problem-solving, and core STEM ideas like mass, friction, aerodynamics, and potential vs. kinetic energy.
How Race Day Works
- Check-in & Inspection: Cars are weighed, measured, and inspected to ensure they meet pack rules. Minor fixes can be made at the pit table before final check-in.
- Heats & Timing: Cars race in multiple heats on different lanes to keep it fair. Electronic timing determines finish order.
- Finals: The fastest cars move on to a final round to crown overall champions.
- Awards: We celebrate both speed and creativity with categories like Fastest Overall, Den Champions, Best Paint, Most Original, and Scout’s Choice.
Build Rules (typical)
- Official kit only. No substitution of wheels/axles not from the kit (unless pack-approved).
- Weight: Up to 5.0 ounces (141.7 g) maximum at check-in.
- Dimensions: Car must fit the track: max length ~7″, width ~2¾”, clearance ⅜”, wheelbase within kit specs.
- Wheels & axles: Light sanding and polishing allowed; no reshaping wheels to reduce contact surface beyond pack rules.
- Propulsion: Gravity only—no springs, magnets, or stored energy devices.
- Lubrication: Dry graphite (if permitted by venue); no oils that can drip onto the track.
(Your pack’s rule sheet is the final word—publish it in advance!)
Safety & Sportsmanship
- Adult tools are for adults; Scouts help with safe, age-appropriate steps.
- Emphasize fair play, cheering for all racers, and congratulating opponents.
- A “no-drama pit lane”: fixes are collaborative, not competitive.
Suggested Timeline
- Workshop #1 (3–4 weeks out): Design & rough cut.
- Workshop #2 (2–3 weeks out): Sanding, weight planning, axle/wheel prep.
- Workshop #3 (1 week out): Paint, decals, final weights, practice runs.
- Weigh-in Night (1–2 days out): Official inspection, seal cars until race.
- Race Day: Heats, finals, awards, and photo ops.
What to Bring
- Your finished car (and any spare weights).
- Scout spirit: uniform shirt or pack T-shirt.
- A labeled box/shoebox to transport and store your car after check-in.
Inclusion & Fun Extras
- Siblings/Parents Open Class: Optional separate bracket with relaxed rules.
- Design Gallery: Display all cars with name cards and fun facts about each design.
- STEM Corner: Quick demos on center of mass, friction, and wheel alignment.
Success Tips for New Families
- Plan your weight early—most speed comes from proper mass placement (toward the rear, within rules).
- Smooth axles, true-spinning wheels, and straight alignment matter more than wild shapes.
- Keep it fun: let Scouts make visible design decisions they’re proud of.
With sawdust, science, and a lot of cheering, the Pinewood Derby brings our pack together for a day that celebrates learning, craftsmanship, and good sportsmanship!

The Advancement Trail
Cub Scout ranks match a Scout’s school grade. Scouts don’t have to earn one rank before starting the next. To earn a rank, they complete six required Adventures plus at least two electives. The required Adventures support Scouting’s core goals. Because ranks are age-appropriate, Scouts can’t earn a rank below their current grade.
